From the vineyards of La Seca, Rueda. The soil contains a lot of lime and clay.
The Sauvignon Blanc grapes are harvested at two different times, with different maturities, to create a balanced blend.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 15 to 17 degrees.
The wine then matures for a further 2 to 3 months on the yeast cells to give the wine additional complexity and smoothness.
In less than 20 years, Bodegas Pedro Escudero has established itself as one of the bestsellers in the Rueda region. With modern labels that are representative of the style of the wines, the Escudero family has stolen many Verdejo hearts in a short time. The wines respond to the market trend for digestible and pleasantly drinkable wines with just that little bit extra.
Pedro Escudero was born and raised among the Verdejo vines, and in 2002, together with his wife Paula, he decided to dedicate himself to the production of white wines. Entirely under their own steam, without any influence from investors, they embarked on the adventure of starting their own business. And this in a country with an overproduction of wine. Pedro believes in his vision, in which quality is more important than quantity. His mission is to make accessible, but high-quality wines, mainly from Verdejo.
Meanwhile, the company has been handed over to the third generation of winemakers, consisting of Pablo, Diego and Maria, of whom Pablo is the creator of the now iconic Valdelagunde wines. The family business has grown to almost 110 hectares, 80 of which are planted with Verdejo. Besides Verdejo, Viura and Sauvignon Blanc are planted. Pablo is the winemaker, Diego does the marketing & sales and Maria is responsible for the financial administration.
Nowadays, to survive in the spider’s web of the wine world, you have to be distinctive and unique. Pedro Escudero succeeded in this with the Cuvée Especial. “There is no wine that gives as much drinking pleasure as this 100% Verdejo”, says Diego. The cooled fermentation in stainless steel tanks preserves the freshness in this wine, which then undergoes a subtle maturation in both French and American oak. Typical for the identity of Escudero.
