“The harvest is conducted during the nighttime to minimize oxidation and preserve the freshness of both aromas and fruit. This winemaking process combines both traditional and organic techniques.
The Château d’Astros boasts a rich history spanning over eight centuries, with a captivating narrative intertwining Knights Templar, Renaissance figures, and the Marseille bourgeoisie. In 1963, Bernard Maurel, the current proprietor, breathed new life into the estate. He introduced new grape varieties and constructed a state-of-the-art cellar adjacent to the château to commence production of the first AOC Côtes-de-Provence in 1970. Initially focused on red wine, the estate later specialized in crafting exquisite rosé wines.
Today, the stewardship of the estate belongs to Bruno Maurel, the 8th generation, and a priest at the Jean-Joseph Allemand Youth Institute in Marseille. Assisted by his cousins, he oversees the family’s business. The transition to organic practices began three years ago, reflecting the deep-rooted commitment and convictions of the family. This family shares an enduring love for both the land and life itself, and is dedicated to guiding people in discovering the treasures of this exceptional place.
Spread across 680 hectares of pristine and untamed natural beauty, this land basks in the gentle embrace of sunlight, creating an enchanting environment where life takes center stage. The estate encompasses 80 hectares of vineyards and 10 hectares of apple orchards. On one hand, they produce organic wines under AOP Côtes-de-Provence and IGP Méditérranée labels, while on the other, they preserve a historical heritage that echoes the captivating history of Provence.”
