Domaine Astruc – A Winery with Experience and Craftsmanship

Acquired by Jean-Claude Mas in 2002, Domaine Astruc is now an established name among wine lovers and is known for its commitment to quality, innovation and expressive wines. This renowned winery is strategically located in Limoux, a region that benefits from both Atlantic influences and the cool Pyrenees. Limoux has a rich history and is known as the birthplace of France’s first sparkling wine, an important chapter in French wine history.

Unique Vineyards and Terroirs

Domaine Astruc’s wines come from several vineyards around Limoux, located in the beautiful Languedoc region. The unique combination of terroirs, soil types and microclimates creates wines with distinct character and finesse.

The Vinification process

After harvesting, the chardonnay grapes are chilled back and pressed, avoiding contact with the skins as much as possible. The juice is fermented at 18 degrees in stainless steel tanks for 24 days. Part of the wine, 15%, undergoes malolactic fermentation. This softens the acids and makes the wine rounder. A third of the wine matures in oak barrels for five months.

About 40% of the wine undergoes maturation in both American and French oak for three to four months. This ageing adds subtle nuances of vanilla, spice and a delicate wood structure, adding to the wine’s complexity and depth.

Commitment to Quality and Sustainability

Domaine Astruc is not only committed to exceptional wine quality, but also to sustainability. The winery uses modern techniques and respectful winemaking methods to protect the environment and natural surroundings. This ensures that the wines are not only a true reflection of the terroir, but also an example of eco-friendly wine production.

Wines from Limoux and the Malras region

The Limoux region, located in France’s southern Languedoc region, is known for its unique terroirs and long wine tradition. Wine production in Limoux has a rich history and a reputation for quality and refinement, both in white and sparkling wines. The combination of Atlantic and Pyrenean influences, together with the diverse soil types and microclimates, contribute to the complex and expressive wines produced here.

Characteristics of Limoux and its Wines

1. Sparkling Wines (Blanquette de Limoux)

Limoux is best known for its sparkling wines, known as Blanquette de Limoux. These wines are considered the oldest sparkling wines in France and even preceded the famous Champagne. Made mainly from the Mauzac grape, these wines offer a refined balance of fresh acidity, fruity aromas and subtle minerality.

-Blanquette de Limoux Brut – A fresh, lively wine with delicate bubbles, citrus aromas and a hint of apple and peach.

-Blanquette de Limoux Demi-Sec – A slightly sweeter variant with subtle fruity notes and a creamy texture.

2. White wines

Besides the famous sparkling wines, Limoux also produces excellent still white wines. Several grape varieties are used here, such as Chardonnay, Viognier, Mauzac and Chenin Blanc.

-Chardonnay – Often aged in oak barrels, it offers rich and complex flavours of stone fruit, vanilla and subtle oak notes.

-Mauzac – This local grape produces fresh, mineral wines with lively acidity and subtle apple and citrus aromas.

3. Red Wines

Although Limoux is mainly known for white and sparkling wines, some excellent red wines are also produced.

-Pinot Noir and Syrah – These grapes produce elegant and subtle red wines with flavours of red fruit, spices and a delicate earthy structure.

Malras – An Important Vineyard Environment

The area around Malras, part of Limoux, is home to some unique vineyards with ideal conditions for viticulture. Soil types range from slate to limestone and sand, contributing to the diversity and complexity of the wines produced.

The combination of cool nights and warm days allows the grapes to ripen perfectly while retaining their natural acidity and fruity character. This unique microclimate makes it possible to produce wines with a perfect balance between structure, complexity and fresh expression.

Commitment to Quality and Tradition

Winemakers in Limoux and Malras combine modern techniques with traditional French winemaking methods. They strive for a sustainable approach to winemaking, paying attention to the environment and nature. Many vineyards use organic and integrated techniques to protect biodiversity and preserve soil quality.
