Fattoria di Basciano, located in the picturesque wine village of Rufina, is a renowned winery in the Chianti Rufina region. Led by Renzo Masi and his son Paolo, this winery has a long tradition of craftsmanship, blending modern techniques with local knowledge to produce top-quality wines. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 300 to 350 meters above sea level, which contributes to the fresh and elegant style of the wines.
Most of the wines from the estate are based around Sangiovese, with additions of other local grapes such as Canaiolo and Colorino, as well as international varieties like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, preserving the fruity aromas. After fermentation, the wines age for 12 months in French oak barrels, adding complexity and a refined oak note without overshadowing the grape characteristics.
The Chianti Rufina region is known for its excellent terroir, which produces wines with a perfect balance of acidity and fruit. The vineyards are located at higher altitudes than other parts of Chianti, resulting in wines that are fresher and more aromatic. The cooler climate, with significant temperature fluctuations between day and night, allows for slower ripening, contributing to a more intense flavor and greater complexity.
The region’s soil, mainly composed of limestone and schist, adds to the mineral qualities of the wines. Sangiovese remains the dominant grape variety, making up at least 70% of the blend, while the other grapes contribute additional depth and complexity. Wines from Chianti Rufina are famous for their elegant structure, vibrant acidity, and complexity, with notes of red fruit, spices, and floral accents. They also have excellent aging potential.
Thanks to the combination of traditional and modern techniques, the ideal terroir, and the dedication of the Masi family, Fattoria di Basciano produces wines that are highly regarded worldwide and perfectly reflect the typical characteristics of the Chianti Rufina appellation.
