This wine is made from Tinta Fina (Tempranillo), sourced from vineyards in Castrillo de Duero at an altitude of 920 meters. The grapes are hand-harvested in small 15 kg crates at the precise moment of optimal ripeness. The wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, adding extra complexity and depth.

Bodegas Peñafiel, located in the prestigious Ribera del Duero DO in Spain, is known for producing high-quality wines. This renowned wine region lies in the north of Spain, along the Duero River, stretching across the provinces of Valladolid, Burgos, Segovia, and Soria in Castile and León. The continental climate, with hot summers and freezing winters, ensures a perfect balance between ripeness and freshness in the grapes. The significant temperature variations between day and night contribute to the development of intense aromas and complex flavors.

Despite being a relatively young winery in this historic region, this producer has quickly gained recognition for its quality wines. The vineyards are located in the heart of Ribera del Duero, along the prestigious “Golden Mile”, home to some of the most celebrated bodegas, such as Vega Sicilia, Pingus, Aalto, and Pesquera. The vines are predominantly planted with Tempranillo, locally known as Tinto Fino or Tinta del País, the signature grape of Ribera del Duero.

Miros de Ribera Crianza is a well-balanced wine that combines the fruity character of Tempranillo with subtle oak aging notes. It offers aromas of ripe red fruit and spices, with a smooth and lingering finish.

This winery represents a modern generation of producers in Ribera del Duero, where innovation and respect for tradition go hand in hand. With a strong focus on quality and terroir, this winemaker has secured a prominent place among Spain’s top wines.

Ribera del Duero: A Leading Spanish Wine Region

Ribera del Duero is a renowned wine region in northern Spain, located along the Duero River. It spans parts of the provinces of Valladolid, Burgos, Segovia, and Soria, within the autonomous region of Castile and León. Since receiving its Denominación de Origen (DO) status in 1982, it has grown into one of the country’s most prestigious wine regions.

Climate and Soil

Ribera del Duero has a continental climate, characterized by hot summers that can exceed 40°C and harsh winters with temperatures well below freezing. The vineyards are situated at elevations between 700 and 1,000 meters, resulting in significant temperature variations between day and night. These fluctuations help develop concentrated aromas and create a well-balanced acidity-to-ripeness ratio in the grapes.

The soil primarily consists of limestone, clay, and sand, which contribute to the structure and complexity of the wines.

Grape Varieties and Wine Production

The dominant grape variety in Ribera del Duero is Tempranillo, locally known as Tinta Fina or Tinta del País. This grape is responsible for the majority of wines from the region, known for its rich fruit character, firm tannins, and excellent aging potential. Some producers also blend small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec to enhance complexity.

Wine Categories and Aging Requirements

The DO Ribera del Duero has strict aging regulations:

Joven – Wines with little to no oak aging.

Crianza – Aged for a minimum of 24 months, including at least 12 months in oak barrels.

Reserva – Aged for a minimum of 36 months, with at least 12 months in oak.

Gran Reserva – Aged for at least 60 months, including a minimum of 24 months in oak barrels.

Renowned Producers

Ribera del Duero is home to some of Spain’s most esteemed wineries. Along the “Golden Mile,” prestigious producers such as Vega Sicilia, Pingus, Aalto, and Pesquera contribute to the region’s global reputation for high-quality wines.

Significance and Development

Over the past few decades, Ribera del Duero has evolved into one of Spain’s most important wine regions. The combination of a favorable climate, ideal soil conditions, and a strong commitment to quality has firmly established the region on the international wine market.
