Fosso Corno: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo riserva with Character

Fosso Corno, a family-run winery in Abruzzo, is renowned for its high-quality Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. The grapes undergo fermentation and 12 months of aging in stainless steel tanks, followed by an additional 12 months in oak barrels. To ensure extra refinement, the wine undergoes bottle aging before release.

Led by siblings Marco and Sabrina Biscardo, this respected estate has been dedicated to producing characterful wines since its founding in 2001. Their range spans from smooth and fruity to rich and powerful, with carefully selected French oak adding complexity.

The 30-hectare vineyard is situated on a hillside overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The cooling sea breeze helps the grapes retain their freshness, while the unique soil composition contributes to a distinctive terroir and layered flavor profiles.

The winery is fully committed to organic viticulture. No synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or artificial fertilizers are used, promoting biodiversity and soil health. Their organic certification underscores their dedication to sustainability and quality.

Region

Abruzzo: A Key Wine Region in Italy

Abruzzo, located on the Adriatic coast in central Italy, is one of the country’s most productive wine regions. Covering approximately 33,000 hectares of vineyards, it is known for both high-quality red and white wines. Thanks to a combination of a temperate maritime climate, varying altitudes, and diverse soil types, the region produces wines with a strong identity.

Main Red Wine: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo

The most prominent wine of the region is Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC, made from the Montepulciano grape. It is characterized by its deep color, full body, and aromas of ripe red fruit, spices, and a smooth tannin structure.

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC – The most widely produced red wine, known for its accessibility and versatility.

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva DOC – Aged for at least two years, including nine months in oak, offering greater complexity and aging potential.

Colline Teramane Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOCG – The highest classification, produced in the province of Teramo, known for its refined wines with excellent aging potential.

Main White Wines: Trebbiano, Pecorino, and Passerina

Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC – A fresh and light wine with citrus and floral notes, ideal for early consumption.

Pecorino DOC – Offers structure and complexity with mineral notes, often used for high-quality white wines.

Passerina DOC – A crisp and approachable white wine with delicate fruit and floral aromas.

Climate and Terroir

Abruzzo benefits from a favorable microclimate due to the influence of both the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine Mountains. The interaction between cool mountain air and warm sea breezes helps preserve freshness and enhance the aromatic profile of the wines. The region’s soils range from clay and limestone to sand and gravel, contributing to the diversity of wine styles.

Sustainable and Organic Winemaking

The region has seen a strong shift towards organic and sustainable wine production. Many wineries avoid synthetic pesticides and use natural fertilizers to preserve biodiversity and soil health.
