Weingut Pfaffl is a renowned family-owned winery, taken over in 1978 by Roman and Adelheid Pfaffl. Located in Stetten, in the Weinviertel region north of Vienna, it has grown into a leading player in Austrian winemaking. Originally focused on agriculture and livestock, the estate shifted its specialization to high-quality wines, with an emphasis on Grüner Veltliner, as well as Zweigelt, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc.

The winery combines modern techniques with respect for the terroir to produce wines that truly reflect the character of the Weinviertel. Sustainable farming practices ensure high-quality production while contributing to environmental preservation. This approach has earned the winery global recognition.

The estate’s Grüner Veltliner is among the most awarded Austrian wines, valued for its balance of freshness, complexity, and minerality. Numerous accolades highlight the consistent quality of its wines.

Today, the winery is led by the second generation, with the continued involvement of Roman and Adelheid Pfaffl. The estate’s expertise was recognized with the title of “European Winery of the Year” by Wine Enthusiast, further strengthening its international influence.

Region

The Weinviertel is the largest wine region in Austria, located north of Vienna, between the Czech border and the Danube. The name literally means “wine quarter,” highlighting the region’s importance to the national wine production. With around 13,000 hectares of vineyards, the area is particularly known for Grüner Veltliner, the iconic grape variety that represents more than half of the local production.

The climate in the Weinviertel is continental, with warm summers and cold winters, promoting balanced grape ripening. The variety of soils – from loess to gravel and limestone – allows for a wide range of wine styles. In addition to Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Zweigelt, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc are also cultivated.

In 2003, the Weinviertel became the first Austrian wine region to receive a controlled designation of origin (DAC), ensuring the authenticity and typical characteristics of its wines. Wines carrying this classification must meet strict requirements, including an aromatic profile marked by spicy and peppery notes, characteristic of Grüner Veltliner.

Thanks to its focus on quality and innovation, the Weinviertel is now a leading wine region in Austria, popular with both wine enthusiasts and professionals in the industry.
