Sancerre from Domaine Régis Jouan: A Pure Expression from the Loire

In the heart of the Loire Valley, in the small village of Sury-en-Vaux, lies the family estate of Régis Jouan.

Here, on gently sloping hills facing southwest, the family cultivates around 4.5 hectares of vineyards within the Sancerre appellation. The soils – rich in limestone, flint (silex), and the typical caillottes – form the foundation for wines marked by freshness, tension, and depth. The vines, averaging 25 to 30 years in age, ensure concentration and character.

The estate is led by Régis himself, together with his daughter Mariannick and son-in-law David Girard, who has taken an active role in winemaking since 2017. This intergenerational collaboration strikes a fine balance between tradition and modern precision, with a strong commitment to sustainability and terroir expression.

The white Sancerre is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc, vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged on fine lees (sur lies fines), adding complexity and roundness to its crisp, vibrant character. The result is a bright white wine with a pale lemon hue and aromas of citrus, green apple, white peach, and subtle minerality. On the palate, all these elements come together in a crunchy, fresh style with lively acidity and a clean, elegant finish.

The red Sancerre – made from Pinot Noir – is also worth noting. Cold maceration, malolactic fermentation, and minimal intervention during ageing preserve its finesse and fruit-driven profile. Red berries, soft tannins, and a gentle spiciness make it an excellent match for lighter meat dishes or mild cheeses.

The quality of the wines does not go unnoticed. Each year, the domaine garners accolades, including mentions in the Guide Hachette and gold medals at competitions in Paris.

In 2020, their white Sancerre was even awarded a Gold Medal and named “Best Sauvignon in the World.”

What sets this domaine apart is its dedication to precision and purity. No excess, just a crystal-clear reflection of what makes Sancerre so beloved: freshness, finesse, and a distinctive minerality rooted in an exceptional terroir.

Whether served as an aperitif, alongside seafood, local goat cheese, or light dishes – this Sancerre always delivers a harmonious, gastronomic experience. A wine that doesn’t hide its origin, but proudly highlights it.

AOP Sancerre: An Icon of the Loire Valley

The AOP Sancerre (Appellation d’Origine Protégée) is one of France’s most prestigious wine regions, celebrated worldwide for its refined wines, primarily made from Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir grapes. Located in the Loire Valley, on the hilly right bank of the Loire River, the appellation encompasses 14 villages surrounding the town of Sancerre.

The Terroir of Sancerre

The success of AOP Sancerre lies in its unique combination of soil types and microclimate:

1. Soils

Caillottes: Limestone soils that contribute to fresh and vibrant wines with delicate aromas.

Terres Blanches: Heavy clay and limestone soils, ideal for producing complex and structured wines.

Silex (Flint): Soils that lend wines a distinctive minerality and smoky notes, especially prominent in Sauvignon Blanc.

2. Climate

The semi-continental climate of Sancerre, with warm summers and cool nights, promotes even ripening of the grapes, resulting in wines with an excellent balance of fruit and acidity.

The Wines of Sancerre

Sancerre is renowned for two main styles of wine:

1. White Sancerre (Sauvignon Blanc)

•White wines are the flagship of the region, known for their clarity, vibrant acidity, and pronounced minerality. Typical aromas include citrus, green apple, gooseberry, and floral notes.

•Perfect pairings include seafood, goat cheese (notably the famous Crottin de Chavignol), salads, and light dishes.

2. Red Sancerre (Pinot Noir)

•Though less well-known, Sancerre also produces elegant red wines from Pinot Noir. These wines are characterized by aromas of red fruits like cherry and raspberry, often complemented by subtle spicy nuances.

3. Rosé Sancerre (Pinot Noir)

•The rosé wines are fresh and light, with notes of strawberry, raspberry, and sometimes a hint of floral accents.

History and Recognition

Sancerre has a long history of winemaking that dates back to Roman times. The region received official AOP status (formerly AOC) for white wines in 1936, followed by recognition for red and rosé wines in 1959. Since then, Sancerre has become internationally synonymous with refined Sauvignon Blanc.

Sancerre in the World of Wine

The wines of AOP Sancerre are prized globally for their purity and versatility. They are a favorite among restaurateurs and sommeliers due to their ability to pair seamlessly with various dishes and their consistently high quality.

With a perfect blend of tradition, terroir, and craftsmanship, Sancerre remains one of the most sought-after wine regions in the world.
