The grapes come from the oldest vineyards of the winery in Montalcino. The average age of the vines is between 25 and 40 years. The vineyards are situated at 150 to 450 metres above sea level.
The differences in altitude ensure coolness, which is favourable for the development of acidity.
The grapes are picked by hand. After the harvest, the grapes undergo a 15-20 day maceration to extract colour, flavour and tannins. Then the grapes are fermented in stainless steel at a controlled temperature.
After fermentation, the wine matures for 30-36 months in large French oak casks of 33-52 hl. After the wine matures for about 12 months in the bottle, before it is put on the market.

The winery Il Poggione is situated in one of the most beautiful terroirs in the world, on the hills around Montalcino. The history of Il Poggione goes back to the year 1890, when Lavinio Franceschi, landowner in Florence, decides to establish a winery in Montalcino. He started making wines from the local Sangiovese clone Brunello and was one of the first winemakers to launch the world famous Brunello di Montalcino, as we know it today, on the market.
