The story of Domaine Régis Jouan is closely interwoven with passion and family collaboration in the heart of the Loire Valley. Originally, this beautiful estate was deeply rooted in Sury-en-Vaux, a well-known village within the famous Sancerre region. Today, the new generation is at the helm: Mariannick Jouan, daughter of Régis, manages the winery alongside her husband, David Girard. The Girard family is a renowned name in the region and, through brothers Anthony and David Girard, owns exceptional vineyards spread across the Centre-Loire. Thanks to this unique shared expertise, the estate successfully crafts a magnificent wine from the neighboring historic Quincy appellation alongside their beloved Sancerres. It is a wonderful crossover where craftsmanship and family tradition come together in the bottle.
The Unique Character of Quincy AOC
Quincy is a hidden gem with an impressive history. In 1936, it became the very first wine region in the entire Loire Valley to be granted official, protected AOC status. The vineyards are located slightly further west along the winding Cher River. What makes Quincy truly special is its terroir: instead of the limestone often found in Sancerre, the vines here grow on ancient river terraces composed of sand and gravel (graves). These warm, light soils give the Sauvignon Blanc grape a completely unique and recognizable profile.
Fresh, Accessible, and Food-Friendly
In Quincy, it is all about 100% Sauvignon Blanc. The interaction with the sandy soil results in a wonderfully expressive and aromatic wine. As soon as you pour a glass, fresh aromas of citrus fruit, white flowers, and a hint of fresh mint greet you, often subtly rounded off with a touch of pepper in the finish. While many other Loire wines sometimes require time to open up, Quincy is already wonderfully soft, round, and directly accessible in its youth. It is the ultimate wine for a casual aperitif, but it truly shines at the dinner table. It pairs perfectly with fresh salads, shellfish, and is an absolute classic with local French goat cheeses like Crottin de Chavignol. The Quincy appellation, located along the Cher River west of Bourges, holds a unique position in French wine history. In August 1936, it became the very first area in the Loire Valley to be officially recognized with a controlled designation of origin (AOC). This historic wine region is synonymous with a specific expression of the Sauvignon Blanc grape, driven by a unique terroir.
Terroir and Product Characteristics
In contrast to the limestone-rich soils of Sancerre, the vineyards in Quincy rest on ancient river terraces composed of sand and gravel (graves), with a deeper subsoil of clay. This light soil warms up quickly and provides excellent drainage. Within the Quincy AOC, only the production of dry white wine from Sauvignon Blanc is permitted.
The interaction between this grape variety and the sandy soils results in a wine with pronounced aromatic directness. Typical features include lively notes of citrus fruit, white flowers, and menthol, often complemented by a subtle, peppery nuance. On the palate, Quincy displays a crisp, linear acid structure, but the texture is rounder and more immediately accessible than that of many neighboring appellations. The wine often develops its full potential within one to three years after the harvest.

Although Domaine Régis Jouan is originally firmly anchored in the limestone and flint (silex) soils of Sury-en-Vaux within the Sancerre appellation, the link with Quincy stems from a strategic generational shift and family collaboration. The estate is currently managed by Mariannick Jouan and her husband, David Girard.
The Girard family simultaneously operates various vineyards within the Centre-Loire. Through this family structure and the expertise of brothers Anthony and David Girard, Domaine Régis Jouan’s portfolio has been expanded to include carefully selected plots outside Sancerre. Through this synergy, the winery succeeds in vinifying a Quincy alongside their traditional Sancerres, purely reflecting the typical sandy elegance and early accessibility of this historic appellation.

Due to its fresh acidity and fruity character, Quincy is highly versatile. The wine functions perfectly as an aperitif and forms a classic pairing with regional goat cheeses such as Crottin de Chavignol.
